About this Event
With a large part of the geological timescale exposed at its surface, Britain has always had a close relationship with the strata it is built on, but what have the rocks ever done for us? (after Cleese et al., 1979). In this talk I would like to take a tour along the wall from Carlisle to Newcastle, but instead of looking at the detailed geological history of the underlying rocks, to take a closer look at how important geology is to the (local) society, in the past (more the expertise of the WallCAP project members), but mainly now and into the future. E.g. heating from minewater in Haltwhistle, the Borderstone quarry near Hexham, capturing CO2 in coals seams in the NE subsurface, the potential of igneous rocks like the Whinsill to fix carbon, geothermal energy in Newcastle. An overview of how people along Hadrian’s wall have improved their lives by make use of the rocks underneath their feet.
The session will be live and held online via Zoom. We will email you with the Zoom joining details by 3pm the day before the event.
